Everyone has survived a week of shots. Ryan got his 6-month immunizations on Monday. After visiting with the doctor about being concerned with Ryan having too many shots all so close together he reassured me that there was nothing to worry about. My poor little boy got 2 shots on Monday. The doctor also wanted to have Ryan's hemoglobin and hematocrit levels checked, so he also had his little heel stuck. He probably felt like a pincushion by the end of the day. He did great though. After the heel stuck he smiled and talked to the lab techs until he had them wrapped around his cute little finger. Ryan got a good report from the doctor. He weighed 11 pounds 13 ounces, and the doctor seemed very pleased with his growth and everything else. Ryan will be going back to the doctor next month for a flu shot.
Ryan got his RSV shots today (yes 2...one in each leg). He did great. Screamed like everything for a while, but has been a happy little boy all day long. I talked to the doctor about his shots. The RSV shot isn't like the other immunizations in that his body doesn't have to work to build an immunity but these shots give him already developed immunity. I learned some things about RSV today that introduced a new fear, so Wade and I are really going to try to be extra careful. RSV most often starts with a runny nose followed by fever. In adults and older kids it "looks" like the common cold. It is EXTREMELY contagious. It can be spread through touching, through the air, and, unlike the cold, it can live on hard surfaces for up to 6 hours. The doctor said the shots will increase the likelihood Ryan won't get RSV by about 80%, and if he should get RSV the shots should help him not get such a terrible case of it. He reminded me that Ryan could still get RSV so we must be very careful.
Thank you all for your prayers. Everything has worked out just fine with all of the shots this week, and God gave me peace about it too.
