Ryan had a good day yesterday. He did well after having the ventilator removed. The RTs all said he was doing great. He is on 2L oxygen at 40-50%. When I held him he seemed a little irritable and the RT said that when babies come off the ventilator they are often agitated for a day or more because their throat is sore. I actually got to hear Ryan cry for the first time yesterday.
Ryan didn't receive any sedation yesterday. His chloral hydrate has been changed from a scheduled dose to just "as needed". He is still receiving Phenobarb and Caffeine. He finished his steroids on the 11th. His feedings are now at 24 ml every 3 hours with HMF added for increased calories. He also recieves MCT oil with each feeding. We aren't sure when they will introduce the bottle to him, but we are expecting within a week or 2. Babies don't gain the ability to suck, swallow, and breathe until between 32-34 weeks gestation. He will be 33 this Sunday. They will also be waiting until his breathing rate is below 70 bpm.
