Ryan actually had a good blood gas yesterday morning. He didn't have to be extubated and reintubated. Yea! He did pretty well throughout the day. He had a couple of de-satting episodes in the morning. He had a significant episode at about 8:00 p.m., and a crowd of people gathered around. They worked on him until his heart rate and oxygen levels were back within an acceptable range. It's great to see how everyone worked together. It's also very comforting to know that when a baby needs help the nurses and RTs act fast. The nurse who started working with Ryan wasn't even his assigned nurse. Ryan and I were able to do Kangaroo Care yesterday. He didn't like the moves from/to the bed, but once he got settled he did fine. He did really well while he was on me. This was the first time I have been able to hold him without a bright blue bili light over him. Ryan is now being fed 5.5 ml every 3 hours. He is still tolerating them well. He is producing plenty of urine, and he is stooling well. We were able to talk to the doctor about his episodes. She explained that it can be a number of things that can cause them, but it is a common thing in neonates. They could be related to vagus nerve stimulation, chronic lung disease problems, mucus plugs, etc. It helps to have a scientific explanation, but it doesn't make it any easier when you see your little baby laying there and his color changes, his oxygen drops in the 20s, and his heart rate drops. We will be so glad when we begin to see less of these episodes. Overall, Ryan is actually doing pretty well.
Prayer Request: Please, please pray for Kenzie. Her kidneys are shutting down, and she has a fungal infection. The doctors are giving her a 10% chance of surviving. We know that our God is much bigger than 10%, and He can make her 100% whole.
